What is Duolingo Test?

Duolingo English Test is a standardized online English test. The test will test on an English proficiency of non-native English speakers. Duolingo test is accepted more than 3,000 universities around the world including Mahidol University International College: MUIC. The test is Computer Adaptive Test and test takers must take the test online through their computers. The test composes of 4 skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.
The test fee is 1,600 THB.

What is Duolingo : Computer Adaptive Test

Duolingo Computer Adaptive Test is that the test will be more or less difficult based on your English background and your answers to previous questions. for example; if you can correct the previous question, the next question will be more difficult. In contrast, if you take the wrong answer, the next question will be less difficult. So, it makes this computer adaptive test have various styles of questions and the test can precisely evaluate the test taker’s proficiency as well.

What are the types of questions in Duolingo English test?

Duolingo English Test takes about 45-55 minutes to complete. The test covers 4 skills : Reading Listening, Writing, and Speaking. To do the test in each part, you will need to use at least 2 skills which make Duolingo English test different from other English tests – one skills for one part. The types of questions are as following;

 

Read and Complete

You have to type the missing words to complete the text. There are 3-7 questions and each question have 3 minutes to complete.

 

Read and Select

You have to select the real English words and be careful to select the false words. There are 3-7 questions and each question have 1 minute to complete.

 

Listen and Select

You have to listen and select the real English words from the lists. There are 3-7 questions and each question have 1.30 minutes to complete.

 

Listen and Type

You have to listen to a statement and type the statement that you hear. You can replay the statement 3 times (including the first time when starting the question). There are 3-7 questions and each question have 1 minutes to complete.

 

Read Aloud

You have to read and record yourself speaking the statement provided in the test. Try speaking clearly and correctly. There are 3-7 questions and each question have 20 seconds to complete.

 

Write About the Photo

You have to write an explanation about the picture given in the test in 1-2 sentences. There are 3-7 questions and each question have 60 seconds to complete.

 

Speak About the Photo

You have to describe aloud the image given in the test. There is 1 question and you have 30-60 seconds to complete.

 

Read then Write

The test will give you a question and you have to respond to the question in at least 50 words. The difficulty of this question will be depend on your answers to your previous questions. There is 1 question and you have 5 minutes to complete.

 

Read then Speak

You will speak to answer to the questions given in the test. In each question topic will also have sub-questions which can help guideline to your answers. You should complete your answer within 90 seconds. (There are 2 questions and you will have preparation time for 30 seconds)

 

Listen then Speak

You will have to listen to a question and prepare yourself to speak to answer the question in 30 seconds. You should complete your answer in 90 seconds.

 

Speaking Sample

You will have to select 1 question topic and speak short answers to the topic from the set. This part will not be calculated in the total score of the test but will be directly sent to the selected universities. (this part takes 1-3 minutes)

 

Writing Sample

You will have to select 1 writing topic. You will have to describe the topic. Try express your writing proficiency as much as you can. (this part takes 3-5 minutes)

Duolingo Score

Duolingo English Test has a full score of 160 point-scale starting from 10 -160 in 5 point increments. The score range can measure your English proficiency as following;

 

120 – 160 : The test takers can understand a variety of demanding written and spoken language including some specialized language use situations. They can grasp implicit, figurative, pragmatic, and idiomatic language. Moreover, they can use language flexibly and effectively for most social, academic, and professional purposes.

 

90 – 115 :  The test takers can communicate and understand unfamiliar topics. They can understand the main ideas of both concrete and abstract writing.

 

60 – 85 : The test takers can understand the main points of concrete writing on daily routine matters and can describe opinions, plans, and experiences.

 

10 – 55 : The test takers can understand very basic English words and phrases and can communicate and understand straightforward information and express themselves in familiar contexts.

Review Duolingo English test

The test will evaluate all 4 English skills: listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing. The test has 4 structures;

  • Literacy – the ability to read and write (the test will test your skills in reading and writing together)
  • Comprehension – the ability to read and listen (the test will test your skills in reading and listening together)
  • Conversation – the ability to listen and speaking (the test will test your skills in listening and speaking together)
  • Production – the ability to writing and speaking (the test will test your skills in writing and speaking)

The Process of Duolingo English Test

  1. Set up and install the program. Normally, it takes about 5 minutes. Do not for get to read the instructions and rules of the test to avoid the mistakes during the test.
  2. Take the test about 45 minutes.
  3. Interview session about 10 minutes.

The test takers will receive their score within 48 hours after the test, you will get an email notification when the score is announced.

Duolingo English test requirements

  1. Your computer must have microphone and WebCam. Also, you must have Chrome or Opera browser. (other browsers are not accepted)
  2. You must have a reliable internet signal.
  3. You must have a passport or driver’s license or other identity card with photo issued by government.
  4. You must stay alone during the test in a quiet and silent room with enough light.
  5. You must sit confront to your computer and your face and ears must be seen clearly in the camera frame all the time.
  6. Your computer must have clear and loud speakers.
  7. You cannot use any type of headphones during the test.
  8. You must not have things such as mobile phone, books, or other things in your test area.
  9. You cannot talk or communicate with other people during the test or even look around other area outside your computer display. You should look directly to the camera frame otherwise you may be suspect of corruption.
  10. You must not have paper or other stationeries.
  11. Do not close the window on the browser until you complete the test.

 

How to apply Duolingo English test

You can apply the test online on https://englishtest.duolingo.com/home where you can choose to pay the test fee by Paypal or Credit or Debit card.

How to send the results to Universities on your list

The test takers can send your score reports to universities at the maximum of 20 universities without fee. For test takers who want to send the score reports to more than 20 universities, you have to directly contact the Duolingo English test support team for more details and considerations.
