IELTS, International English Language Testing System, is held by British Council. There are two main different types of IELTS by British Council.

  1. IELTS Academic test: If you want to study at university: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or PhD, or work in an English-speaking company, you will need to take the IELTS Academic test.

How do I apply for the IELTS test with the British Council ?

You can apply on British Council website. Then choose a test center, test date, fill in your information, and make a payment via credit card. You can contact their service desk at Siam Square though they encourage you to apply online.


When can I take the test?

The IELTS test with the British Council is held monthly. You can choose between:

  1. Paper-delivered test which is paper-based. For the speaking test, you are assessed by an examiner who is a native speaker. It is held four times a month for Academic Modules and two times a month for General Training Modules. The test result is announced around two weeks after the test.
  2. Computer-delivered is done on a computer except speaking test that is carried out by an examiner who is a native speaker. It is held monthly with more frequency, approximately 10 times or more a month. The test result takes around five days after the test.


How to apply for the IELTS exam at the British Council

It is very easy to apply for the IELTS exam at the British Council. You can follow the steps below, but before that please prepare your Thai National ID Card or passport as you will be required to fill out the information accordingly. It is very important that the information you provide here should match the documents.

Every candidate applying for the IELTS exam at the British Council should be above 16 ปyears old. If the candidate is under the age of 18 will need to submit a parental consent to apply for the exam.

The online application for IELTS exam under the British Council can be completed by:

  1. Enter the application page for the IELTS exam at the British Council at
  2. Select the type of exam you want. Most people select the IELTS Academic Test as they would like to use the results to apply for further studies. Check the price for the test and then click on “Find and apply for exams.”
    Note : There are several things to be careful about the exam at this stage which includes information before applying for the exam, confirmation of the test date, and also the terms and conditions. Applicants are recommended to read and understand before applying for the exam.
  3. Select the test type one more time, which in most cases will be the “IELTS Academic”
  4. Select the country and the city where you wish to take the test. Once that is done, a window will popup with all the information summarized. Please go through the details and make sure all the information is accurate.

  5. For people with disabilities who have medical documents will be assisted with the facilities needed from the menu “I have accessibility needs for the test date.” However, if you do not require such assistance, you can skip to the next step.
  6. Select the type of test that you wish to attend which can be either Paper based or Computer based. If you selected the “Paper based” option, the results would take 13 days to arrive, counting from the day that the test was taken. Whereas, results for a “Computer based” test would take 3-5 days to arrive. If you are happy with any type, you could also select “I don’t mind.” Regardless of the test type, all IELTS tests are taken at the test taking centers and cannot be done from home. Also, the Speaking session is taken with an Examiner directly, not with a computer.
  7. Choose the desired test date by selecting from the menu “Show me all dates” and then selecting “Search for test” in order to allow the system to show all the available dates. You can also look at the calendar available at “Let me choose the dates”
  8. Then, the system will display all the details for the selected exam and if you confirm the details, you would have to click on “Book for 6,900 THB”
  9. Speaking session can be changed to a different time by selecting the “Change speaking” on the date we would like to change to. For example, if you are interested to take the test on the 22nd of May, you can select “Change speaking” in the box of 22nd of May. Similar like before, after you have made your selection, click on “Book for 6,900 THB”
    Note: Both IELTS paper based and computer based have the same price.
  10. Create an account for the exam by filling in your email and password to use for logging into the system in the future. After that, you will have to go through a few questions and answers regarding who you are applying this test for. If you are applying for yourself, select “My Self” but if you are a parent applying for you child, select “My Child.”
    Note : If you have already made an account before, you can click on the “Log in” button and then insert your email and password.
  11. Next, fill in the “About you” section with your first name, last name, date of birth, and gender where all the information should match your Thai National ID Card or passport. After that, you would be asked to fill in your contact information which includes your address and telephone number.

  12. After that, go through a marketing survey and read the terms and conditions carefully before selecting “I agree to the account registration terms and conditions”. Finally, click “Save and continue”
    From this step onwards, the system will only allow you to stay logged-in for 20 minutes.
  13. Choose whether you would like to give your proof of identification using the Thai National ID Card or a passport. Then, proceed to fill in the details like your date of birth and the expiry date of the document. Finally, click “Save and continue”
  14. Fill in all of the other details like your English education details, highest qualification in education, occupation, and the country that you would like to go to for further studies.

  15. After that, a popup screen will show you all the summary of the test details including the type of test, date, time, and location. It would also have a summary of your profile. Please review them one more time and make any changes if necessary. Once you are sure, proceed to the next step.

  16. Select the order recipient to whom you want to send the order details to. If you want to send it to yourself, click the “Myself” from the menu. To send to parents or others, click on the menu “Another Person” and if you want to send to the company click on the “A Company” from the menu If you select “Myself”, accept the terms by clicking on the page “I agree to the IELTS terms and conditions and cancellation policy” and enter the payment by clicking on “Book & pay now” which will be your online credit card payment.
    Note : Candidates who are inconvenient to pay immediately by online credit card debit. You can click on the menu “Book now, pay later”. Or else there are 2 ways for the payment: money transfer and manual payment at the British Council, Siam Square branch.
  17. After filling in, click on the menu “Book & pay now” and then fill in the credit card information to pay for the exam registration. You will have to pay immediately by credit or debit card online.
    Note: If you chose “Book & Pay Now”, but there may be a reason why you could not pay immediately at that time, you can come in to cut the credit card online later. However, it must be performed within 24 hours. If beyond this time, the exam that you have reserved will be canceled and you have to start all over again.
  18. After the payment is complete, you will immediately receive an email confirming the exam registration. Along with that, you will be able to view the application situation in your account There will be both information about the exam that you have applied for and the details of any exams you have taken previously.


After this, the only thing left is your preparation. Make sure to check the details in the email as to what actually you will need to bring on the exam date. Also, do not forget to spare time for traveling as well!

British Council and IDP are both authorized test providers. They use the same test papers. The test results from both of them are valid and can be used globally. They also offer the same test types: Academic and General as well as IELTS for UKVI, IELTS Life Skill. In terms of exam room facilities, either is of the same standards.
