TOEIC Day 2 – Grammar Practice 1
In the first part of reading test, it is sentence completion. This part requires knowledge of vocabulary and good understanding of grammar. These are most common subjects with tips on how to choose the right answer.
The manager of the group was a brilliant man ———— only weakness was that he hated to accept defeat.
A) whose B) who C) whom D) who’s
Relative pronoun test is the one that you should do it right because, in my opinion, it’s the easiest. Relative pronoun comes in a complex sentence. Therefore, if the sentence is unclear, I suggest you split the sentence into two independent sentences.
The manager of the group was a brilliant man.
The manager’s only weakness was that he hated to accept defeat.
From the sentence, I assumed that ‘the weakness’ is the manager’s weakness. So it should be replaced with ‘whose’, which represents possession.
Customers have expressed satisfaction ———— this product, which has lead to an increase in the employees’ motivation.
A) to B) against C) with D) from
Preposition is frequently tested. A preposition is subject to the noun or verb to be used with. Some prepositions are easy to remember, some are confusing. So I suggest that when you practice on your vocabulary (nouns and verb), you should look up the accompanying preposition too. We call this collocation. You can go to www.ozdic.com for the collocation.
Let’s say I can’t remember which preposition should be used with satisfaction. Here’s how I eliminate unlikely answer. Satisfaction + to should be followed by a person because you ‘express your satisfaction to someone’.
‘expressed satisfaction + against’ sounds negative. ‘Against’ is often seen with negative word such as oppose against, fight against.
‘expressed satisfaction from this product’ doesn’t sound right. So there is only one left and the answer is B. against.
—————– power failure, change the batteries once in six months.
A) Having avoided B) Avoiding C) To avoid D.) Avoid
Each choice gives different meaning to the whole sentence but you should identify what the true purpose of this sentence is. Look at the second sentence.
‘change the batteries once every six months’ is a suggestion. Therefore, the clause that comes before it must suggests the reason why this should be done.
The right answer is C. to avoid because To + verb is like ‘in order to’.
