Formal words

Formal language means the language we use in serious situation such as school/university essay or paper, job application letter, or published articles. On the contrary, informal language means the language we use with friends and family in everyday situation such as note for friends, e-mail to relatives, or wishing cards. In IELTS, of course, you should use formal words as much as possible. Here are some words that should be noted. More interesting words are in the link.

Discuss two opinions essay

You will be given two contrasting opinions on a subject and asked to write an essay that discusses both opinions and state your standpoint. It will look like this.

Some people think that the main factors influencing a child’s development these days are things such as television, friends, and music. Others believe that the family still remains more important.
Discuss both opinions and give your opinion.

Suggested Structure

Introduction paragraph

First body paragraph – why people agree to the first opinion

Second body paragraph – why people agree to the second opinion

Third body paragraph – you own opinion

Conclusion paragraph

This essay examines this question from both points of view and then I will give my own perspective on the matter.

Advantages and disadvantages

If it’s advantages and disadvantages essay, a topic is given, followed by questions like ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?’. In this case, you need at least two body paragraphs; one for the advantages and one for the disadvantages. However, if you questions is something like this ‘Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?’, the structure of your essay should be like this.

 

Suggested Structure

Introduction paragraph – stating if the benefits are more than the drawbacks (if yes)

First body paragraph – a disadvantage

Second body paragraph – first advantage

Third body paragraph – second advantage

Conclusion paragraph
