IELTS writing (Bar chart, Line graph)

Task Two is report ielts essay, which has nothing to do with your opinion (or anyone’s opinion, for that matter). Your job is to interpret a graphic data into a written text. Unlike Task Two where you will be given questions, this task has no guideline questions. Therefore, the most important thing is to select the right angles to write about, using around 150-170 words. There are four criteria to be concerned just like Task One but the detail of assessment is different. Please see this link.

ielts bar chart

Bar chart

Bar charts are used to present data in term of a comparison between each category in an aspect. That could be annual car production of three manufacturers, total exports in first quarter for each type of goods, or popularity of each kind of foods in a school’s cafeteria. It may look more complicated like this one.

What to look for

Since bar charts are meant to illustrate comparisons between data, these are some points that should be included in the essay.

  • The tallest and the shortest bars
  • Changes in bars overtime
  • A bar comparing to another

Line graph

Line graph is used to represent data in term of comparison like bar charts but a line graph is specifically fit for demonstrating the variation of those data through time. This tool is useful for finding the pattern of data, more particularly, the trends. Therefore, you may see it presents world temperature over the last decade, employee resignation rate over a year, or proportion of population over time.
