CU-TEP Cloze Test
Day 2 Cloze Test
Cloze test is the test which you have to fill in the blanks with given choices. The text comes in the form of a passage of a certain topic. As usual, the topic covers general knowledge.
| Can we see (1) ……… the earth is a globe? Yes, we can, when we watch a ship that sails out to sea. If we watch closely, we see that the ship begins (2) …….. . The bottom of the ship disappears first, and then the ship seems to sink lower and lower, (3) ……… we can only see the top of the ship, and then we see nothing at all. What is hiding the ship from us? It is the earth. Stick a pin most of the way into an orange, and (4) ……… turn the orange away from you. You will see the pin disappear, (5) ……… a ship does on the earth.
With some words missing, some of you may not get the idea of the passage. The first step is to read the whole paragraph (or passage) first. Then you’ll get some idea about the story.
The second step is to identify the word type. Remember that the cloze test tests both your grammar and vocabulary. The third step is to choose the right answers.
How to guess the word type and choose the answer.
(1) In this sentence, you can see that there are two clauses; the ‘can’ clause and the ‘is’ clause. So the word that is in between the two clauses must be a conjunction.
|A. if||B. where||C. that||D. whether||E. when|
Eliminate A. if because the sentence is not a condition. Eliminate B. where because ‘where’ is used to modify a place. The same logic is applied to E. when (modify time). Eliminate D. whether because ‘the earth is a globe’ is already a fact. So the correct answer is C. that.
(2) The answer lies with the word ‘begin’ which must always be followed by a gerund or an infinitive. So the answer should be V+ing or to + infinitive verb.
|A. being disappeared||B. to be disappeared||C. to have disappeared||D. to disappear||E. having disappeared|
Eliminate A. and B. because ‘disappeared’ is not an adjective so it shouldn’t be following the verb to be. What is it’s a passive voice? It can’t be a passive voice because ‘disappear’ is an intransitive verb which is never passive. C. and E. are not in accordance with what we predict. That’s why D. to disappear is the correct answer.
(3) You can see that it’s a compound sentence explaining a sequence. So the missing word, which is at the beginning of the clause, must be a sequence indicator that has the same meaning as ‘and then’.
|A. until||B. since||C. after||D. by the time||E. unless|
A., B., C., and E. are used in a complex sentence. The correct answer is D. by the time.
Try to answer questions 4 and 5 by yourself.
|(4)||A. reluctantly||B. accidentally||C. slowly||D. passionately||E. carefully|
|(5)||A. the same||B. alike||C. just as||D. by the way||E. similar to|
As you can see that (1), (2), (3), and (5) test you grammar. Meanwhile, (4) tests your vocabulary.
